The Sacred Yamunotri and Gangotri Dham Yatra
Yamunotri and Gangotri are the first two shrines in the traditional
Uttarakhand Char Dham sequence. Yamunotri is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna,
while Gangotri is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. Together, these Himalayan
temples hold immense spiritual importance and attract devotees who wish to
seek the blessings of the two sacred river goddesses.
Travel Trek’s 5-day Yamunotri Gangotri Do Dham Yatra from Haridwar follows
a practical route through Barkot, Janki Chatti and Uttarkashi. Yamunotri
requires a mountain trek from Janki Chatti, whereas Gangotri Temple is
accessible by road through the beautiful Harsil Valley. Keeping separate
base stays for the two dhams makes the journey more comfortable and avoids
unnecessarily long same-day transfers.
The officially listed opening date for both Yamunotri and Gangotri in 2026
is 19 April 2026. Temple timings and closing dates should
be reconfirmed before departure.
About Yamunotri Dham
Yamunotri Dham lies in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarkashi district and is
the spiritual home of Goddess Yamuna. Janki Chatti is the last motorable
point for the commonly used route. From there, pilgrims cover approximately
6 km each way on foot or with locally arranged pony, palki or doli assistance.
Near the shrine, devotees worship Divya Shila and visit Surya Kund, the
natural hot-water spring where rice or potatoes are traditionally prepared
as an offering. Janki Chatti is also known for its natural hot springs.
About Gangotri Dham
Gangotri Temple stands on the banks of the Bhagirathi River at an elevation
of about 3,100 metres. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and is
associated with the legend of King Bhagirath’s penance and the descent of
the Ganga to Earth. Gaumukh Glacier, reached on a separate permitted trek
beyond Gangotri, is regarded as the physical source of the Bhagirathi.
Unlike Yamunotri, Gangotri is accessible by motorable road. The route from
Uttarkashi passes through Gangnani, Harsil Valley and Bhairon Ghati, offering
memorable views of rivers, forests and Himalayan peaks.

Compulsory 2026 Yatra Registration
The Uttarakhand Government requires pilgrims and vehicles to be registered
before beginning the Char Dham journey. Create the tour on the official
portal, enter each pilgrim’s details, download the registration letter with
its QR code and carry valid photo identification throughout the trip.
Best Time for Yamunotri and Gangotri Yatra
Late April to June
The early summer season is popular for pilgrimage. Roads and trails can
be busy, so hotels and transport should be booked well in advance.
September to October
The post-monsoon season can offer clearer mountain views and fewer crowds,
although mornings and evenings are colder.
Heavy rain during July and August can cause landslides, temporary closures
and itinerary changes. Always check official weather and road advisories
before travelling.
